sex_old_ageSex is one of the most important aspects of any marriage, and a sexless marriage often leads to frustration, anger, hurt and emotional distance between two partners who once deeply loved each other. Despite the importance of sex, as people age, too often they forgo making love and put children, careers, and selves ahead of their beloved partners. Indeed, the rate of marital lovemaking decreases as age increases. Such a phenomenon is unfortunate since sex is physically and emotionally invigorating and could very well be the greatest fountain of youth.

One of the most exciting benefits of sex is that it is an excellent form of physical exercise. Indeed, a one hour rump in the sack can burn up to 250 calories for a 150 pound person. Given that blood flows to numerous body parts, sex greatly increases blood circulation. As we age, our blood circulation reduces, but sex counteracts this, thereby helping to slow aging and revitalizing us.

Sex is also good for your heart. In first-world countries, such as the United States, Britain, and Australia, heart disease is the number one killer of men. Luckily, “British researchers…found that men who had sex twice or more a week had a lower risk of heart attack over the course of 10 years than men who had sex less often.” In addition to heart disease, another deadly killer of men over 50 is prostate cancer. Fortunately, many studies associate frequent ejaculation with lower incidences of prostate cancer, which indicates that sex could be a potent fighter of this terrible disease.

Nevertheless, the greatest benefit of sex is its impact on self-esteem. As people age, they feel older, lose their vitality, feel emasculated or unattractive, which erodes their self-esteem. Luckily, having sex and knowing that your spouse still wants you, looking in their eyes, and connecting with them is one of the greatest self-esteem boosters. It makes you feel special, loved, and youthful. Women in stable relationships who have sex often report feeling better about their bodies.

So find your partner. Don’t be a prude. And release your inhibitions. If you do, you are strengthening your marriage, improving your heart health, increasing your physical fitness, and enhancing your mental health. But most importantly, you are putting up a good fight against aging.
