Porridge:Superfood for breakfast

The word porridge might bring to mind the story of the three bears, but maybe Goldilocks was on to something with her pilfered breakfast. Porridge is an inexpensive, healthy and fast way to a full stomach.
The easiest way to a hot filling breakfast is to boil crushed oats or oatmeal in either water or milk. Thickness is a matter of how much oats are added. No one wants thin porridge or gruel as it harkens back to days of workhouses. For a hearty breakfast try adding salt or sugar, milk or cream to taste. Also try mixing in some other cereals such as wheat or barley to give the meal texture.
Experts say that children and adults concentrate better on a full stomach and oats are a great plan due to all the health benefits it packs into one bowl. This particular meal has cancer-fighting properties as it reduces the toxicity of certain bile acids. It also contains other chemicals which are believed to be cancer fighters.
The fiber in a bowl of oatmeal can reduce LDL or ‘bad cholesterol’ while maintaining the levels of HDL or ‘good cholesterol’. Perhaps this is why folks who eat porridge are less likely to develop heart disease. Having this hot breakfast is better than downing a cold, hard vitamin pill. Consider that swimming in the porridge bowl with the milk and sweetener a diner will find zinc, cooper, iron, vitamin E, and selenium.
