trauben_rotGrape seed extracts are industrial derivatives from whole grape seeds. Typically, the commercial opportunity of extracting grape seed constituents has been for chemicals known as polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins recognized as antioxidants.

It has recently come under study along with other antioxidants present in grapes like resveratrol. While resveratrol has had more media attention, grape seed extract should not be overlooked as a possible substance that can aid in overall health.

Studies to date on grape seed extract are only preliminary, but so far are showing positive results. Studies so far show that grape seed extract is an antibacterial, an antiviral and an anti-inflammatory. It is one of the few antioxidants that can actually penetrate the blood and protect the brain and its tissues. In one clinical study it was shown to kill leukemia cells in a laboratory setting.

The list of benefits grape seed extract could provide goes on to include heart health. It has been used to protect blood vessels and even prevent the formation of plaque in arteries. It can increase blood flow and circulation. All of these benefits very well could lead to less heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

Grape seed extract has been shown to attack free radicals in the body leading to improved health in other areas. Improvement of mental alertness and memory loss prevention are thought to be positively impacted with grape seed extract.

Additionally, grape Seed extract has been used by many to treat varicose veins, pms, dental plaque and eye health to name a few. Some other benefits that this antioxidant may provide include an increase in gastric health and the prevention and/or treatment of diabetes.

Scientists are also taking a close look at grape seed extract in terms of cancer prevention and cancer treatment. Testing shows that grape seed extract may just kill cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells intact.

There are a few side effects you will want to watch out for if you decide to try out grape seed extract for yourself. In some people it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, sore throat or a cough. You may also get a rash and in rare cases have bleeding or hemorrhaging. Although all of these side effects are rarely reported it is always best to check with your healthcare provider before adding grape seed extract to your diet.

As you can see, grape seed extract certainly has some very promising preliminary findings. Only time will tell if this extract could be one of the links in helping us to retain eternal youth. It’s related compound, resveratrol, is gaining even more popularity than grape seed extract because of its anti aging benefits.
