spritze_liegendA new vaccine has been announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The new vaccine that will prevent against seasonal influenza, was approved on Friday.

The vaccine that is made by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics will be called Agriful. It is not meant to be used as a vaccine against the H1N1 virus, or what most people know as the swine flu.

Novartis got the vaccine approved with an accelerated process through the FDA. The vaccine can effectively induce antibody levels that help prevent seasonal influenza. More studies will be done to support these findings.

Agriflu will be given in a single injection to those that are 18 and older. The vaccine will be available in single dose syringes.

For those that are 4 years old and under, Novartis manufactured a specific vaccine for the age group. Fluvirin has also been licensed to help prevent seasonal influenza.

There is not a current vaccine that is 100% effective in preventing any disease, the FDA states it is important to vaccinate against the flu.

Eric Althoff is the Novartis Spokesman. Althoff has explained the vaccine is made in Siena, Italy and includes eggs. The vaccine has been available in Europe but under a different name, Aggripal. This newest vaccine will help in the supply
