Benefits and Risks of Taking Testosterone

Mid Adult Man Drinking CoffeeWhen a male hits age 30 his testosterone levels start to fall anywhere from 1% to 2% per year. With the decrease in testosterone and aging, you will notice a difference in sex drive, energy, cognitive impairment and muscle mass.

Therefore, it is best if a Doctor checks them so they can pin point if it is in fact the testosterone levels. There are some benefits in getting these levels checked.

Once a doctor has determined the testosterone levels, he can then start to prescribe testosterone. This might increase the lean body mass and decrease fat. You might also notice an improvement in insulin sensitivity.

However, as with any prescription there are some risks. Potential problems include enlargement of the prostate, the worsening of sleep apnea and overproduction of red blood cells, which can cause a stroke if the levels climb too high. Some other rises of testosterone are a cluster of health risk factors that include high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol and inflammation.

An increase in muscle strength, physical performance or quality of life may not improve. Blood pressure, inflammation and high cholesterol can remain under control with the help of a doctor. Mood improvements, vitality and social functioning might not increase. It will depend from person to person.
